The CMP is a blood test that can be used to evaluate several aspects of a patient’s health, including glucose levels, kidney function, electrolyte balance, and liver function. Specifically, a CMP measures the levels of the following substances in the blood:
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
- Carbon dioxide (bicarbonate)
- Certain liver enzymes (ALT, ALP, and AST)
- Total protein
- And other key substances
A physician may recommend that you receive a CMP as part of a regular health exam or to screen for a possible medical condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. You may be instructed to stop eating or drinking for 10 to 12 hours prior to the test.
