The CMP and Other Lab Tests Are Performed On Site at UHealth Jackson Urgent Care – Keystone Point
The CMP, or comprehensive metabolic panel, is a blood test that measures glucose, fluid, and electrolyte levels while also evaluating liver and kidney function. This broad screening tool can be used to check for diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, and other related conditions, and also to monitor the treatment of chronic conditions related to liver and kidney health. At UHealth Jackson Urgent Care – Keystone Point you can get a CMP and other diagnostic testing performed on site, which means that you won’t have to run all over town to get the answers you need. And, to help ensure accuracy and reduce the need for inconvenient retesting, all CMP and other lab test results are reviewed by a UHealth – the University of Miami pathologist in addition to an on-site physician.
Oftentimes, a physician at UHealth Jackson Urgent Care – Keystone Point will order comprehensive metabolic panel testing as part of the routine blood workup needed for a general wellness exam. Specifically, a CMP measures the blood levels of:
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
- Carbon dioxide (bicarbonate)
- Total bilirubin
- Total protein
- Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
- Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
- Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)
If the results of a CMP reveal an unusually high or low level of one or more of these substances, a more specific follow-up test may be ordered. These measures can confirm that the body’s fluids are in balance and that its various systems are working properly. For instance, a CMP can check heart rhythm and muscle contraction, as well as liver and kidney function. This is important because the liver produces substances that aid the body’s digestive and immune systems, and also helps to control the amounts of glucose, protein, and fat in the blood, all of which are measured by the CMP. The kidneys help to maintain the optimal balance of water, salts, and minerals in the blood, and also filter out waste and other unnecessary substances.
