The treatment for whiplash can vary by the severity of the neck injury and the amount of neck pain you experience. To diagnose whiplash, your doctor will give you a thorough examination to check your symptoms, assess your range of motion in the neck, head and arms, and your ability to manage day-to-day tasks. You may also need X-rays and other tests to rule out any other issues.
After your evaluation, your doctor may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication or muscle relaxers for a few days to soothe pain and reduce swelling. If you have ongoing whiplash pain or need assistance with range-of-motion exercises, your doctor may also recommend that you see a physical therapist.
