Available STD Tests

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

HIV tests can be performed at all of our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers. HIV, known as the human immunodeficiency virus, is a sexually transmitted disease that attacks the body’s immune system and only spreads through bodily fluid contact. When the immune system is compromised, other serious diseases can threaten your health. While there is no cure for the disease, it can be effectively managed through antiretroviral therapy. Early HIV signs and symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever and chills
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Rash

Late-stage HIV infection symptoms include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Night sweats and chills
  • Long fevers
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Extremely swollen lymph nodes
  • Chronic headaches and migraines

The symptoms of HIV can hide for long periods of time. That means it’s important to get tested regularly if you are sexually active—even if you are not showing any symptoms.

Syphilis

Syphilis tests can be performed at all of our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers. Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection that spreads through sexual contact. It can also be passed on from a pregnant woman to her baby during birth. Syphilis usually starts with a small, painless sore, called a chancre, that may develop on the skin near the mouth or genital area. While a chancre can go away on its own after a few weeks, the disease may remain in the body and progress to the next phase without treatment. Secondary symptoms of syphilis may include:

  • Sores that resemble warts
  • Skin rash
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Sore throat
  • Hair loss
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness (fatigue)

Syphilis is treatable with antibiotics, especially in the early stages. Without treatment, the condition can get worse over time and cause serious health problems.

Hepatitis B & C

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C testing can be performed at all of our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers.

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are both viral infections that affect the liver. The main difference is that people may contract Hepatitis B from contact with the bodily fluids of a person who has an infection. Hepatitis C usually only spreads through blood-to-blood contact.

You are at a higher risk of a Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infection if you:

  • Have had unprotected sex
  • Have HIV infection or AIDS
  • Are the child of a mother who had Hepatitis C
  • Have liver disease
  • Have shared an infected needle

Many people infected with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C do not show any symptoms, while others experience minor symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, fever or flu-like symptoms, and joint pain.

If you are sexually active, routine testing is recommended to check for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The infection is treatable, but if left untreated, it can become chronic and can lead to serious liver damage.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea tests can be performed at all of our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers. Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. It is a bacterial infection that spreads through sexual intercourse with an infected person. It can also be passed on from a pregnant woman to her baby during birth. Gonorrhea symptoms typically appear between 1 to 10 days after infection, while some people may never have symptoms at all. Symptoms for women include:

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain during sex
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pain when urinating
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain

Symptoms for men include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the testicles
  • Swollen scrotum
  • Pain when urinating
  • White, yellow, or greenish discharge from the penis

If you are sexually active, routine testing is recommended to check for gonorrhea. The disease can be cured with antibiotics. Left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic infections, infertility and other serious health problems.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia tests can be performed at all of our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers to check for chlamydia trachomatis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is common among teens and young adults.

Most people infected with chlamydia do not show any symptoms, while others experience symptoms such as burning, soreness, or itching of the genitals, discomfort while urinating, and colored vaginal discharge with an unusual smell.

If you are sexually active, routine testing is recommended to check for chlamydia. The infection is treatable, but if left untreated, it can lead to many reproductive problems for women.

Herpes

Herpes tests can be performed at all of our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers. Herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, also known as HSV. Herpes can cause small, painful sores that look like blisters on the skin in different parts of the body. There are two main types of herpes infections:

  • HSV-1 causes cold sores or blisters around the mouth and is generally spread by kissing or by sharing eating utensils with an infected person.
  • HSV-2, also known as genital herpes, causes cold sores or blisters in the genital area and is generally spread by sexual contact. HSV-2 can sometimes cause mouth sores.

Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 are recurring infections. That means after the first outbreak of sores clears up, there may be another outbreak in the future that is triggered by stress, fatigue, or another infection. While there is no cure for herpes, there are medicines that can help relieve symptoms and shorten the length of outbreaks.
