Diaper Rash Treatment in Miami-Dade
Diaper rash, also known as diaper dermatitis, is the most common skin condition among babies. It is typically caused by moisture in the diaper area, such as urine or stools, which leads to bacterial growth or skin chafing. Common symptoms of a diaper rash include irritated skin that appears pink or red in the diaper area, dry raised bumps, skin that is red to the touch, inflammation, and discomfort or crying, especially during diaper changes. Sometimes a skin infection caused by yeast or bacteria may occur alongside a diaper rash. If your baby’s diaper rash does not seem to get better within two to three days or your baby is experiencing a fever, rash blisters, or severe discomfort, visit an urgent care center near you to treat the condition quickly and avoid any complications from an infection.
How Our Urgent Care Can Help
If your baby is showing signs of a diaper rash, you can walk in to any nearby UHealth Jackson Urgent Care center without an appointment and be seen quickly by a UHealth – University of Miami Health System board-certified doctor.
Your doctor will examine your baby’s diaper rash and ask about any other medical conditions, medications, or products that come into contact with your baby's skin. Depending on the severity of the condition, your doctor may also check for a fungal or bacterial infection. After reviewing your baby’s results and confirming a diagnosis, we may prescribe a mild hydrocortisone steroid cream, an antifungal cream if there is a fungal infection, or antibiotics if there is a bacterial infection to treat the diaper rash and provide immediate relief.

What causes a diaper rash?
The most common cause of diaper rash is leaving a wet diaper on for too long, which leads to prolonged exposure to moisture against the skin. The moisture irritates the skin and it starts to break down or easily rubs against the diaper. The chemicals in the urine and stool also cause a rash or can lead to an infection. Other factors that can increase the risk of diaper rash include diapers that are too tight, sensitive skin, antibiotics, and the introduction of new foods.
How do I prevent and treat diaper rash?
The most important step you can take to prevent and treat a diaper rash is keeping your baby’s skin as clean and dry as possible. You should change your child’s diaper right away as soon as they pee or poop to avoid irritation. When you change the diaper, clean the area gently with a soft cloth or non-alcohol wipes. You can also use barrier creams that contain zinc to soothe the skin and prevent contact with feces and other irritants. If the diaper rash does not go away with home treatment, your baby may need to take mild hydrocortisone (steroid cream), antibiotics, or antifungal cream depending on the cause of the diaper rash.
When should I visit an urgent care center for my baby’s diaper rash treatment?
If your baby's skin doesn't improve after a few days or has a fever, blisters, or pus that drains from the rash, you should visit your nearby urgent care center to seek treatment. Your baby may need a prescription medication to treat diaper rash, or the rash may have another cause, such as a bacterial or fungal infection.
