COVID-19 Treatment in Miami

COVID-19 is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe symptoms. While many people recover at home with rest and supportive care, treatment is available for those at higher risk of complications.

You can walk into any nearby UHealth Jackson Urgent Care center without an appointment to see a doctor quickly to discuss your symptoms and whether COVID treatment is right for you.

Common COVID Symptoms

COVID symptoms can appear two to 14 days after exposure. The most common symptoms include:

  • Fever or chills – May be persistent or irregular
  • Cough – Usually dry, sometimes persistent
  • Fatigue – Feeling tired or weak
  • Loss of taste or smell – A unique early symptom in many people
  • Muscle or body aches – General discomfort
  • Shortness of breath – Especially concerning in high-risk patients
  • Sore throat, headache, and nasal congestion – Often present in milder cases
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms – Such as diarrhea or nausea in some patients

How Our Urgent Care Can Help

At UHealth Jackson Urgent Care, our medical team can evaluate your symptoms, perform COVID testing, if needed, and determine if treatment is appropriate. If you’re eligible, we may prescribe Paxlovid, an oral antiviral medicine that helps prevent severe illness in high-risk patients.

Our doctors will also guide you on how to monitor symptoms at home, when to seek further care, and what precautions to take to avoid spreading the virus to others.

COVID and Flu Testing Available

Since flu and COVID have similar symptoms, we offer testing for both viruses at our urgent care centers.

Knowing what you're dealing with helps our team tailor care to your needs.

Steps to Take When You Arrive

  • Let the front desk know if you’re experiencing COVID symptoms or have tested positive recently.
  • Wear a mask to lower the spread to others in the clinic.
  • Use hand sanitizer or wash your hands frequently.

Understanding COVID Treatment

What’s COVID treatment?

COVID treatment includes a range of medications and therapies aimed at managing and alleviating the symptoms. The primary goal is to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death, particularly among people at high risk for complications. Early intervention and appropriate treatment can significantly reduce the risk of severe outcomes, making it crucial for those who test positive for COVID to seek medical advice immediately.

Who’s at high risk for COVID complications?

Certain groups are at higher risk for developing severe COVID illness, needing more treatment and monitoring. These high-risk groups include:

  • Older adults: People 65 and older are at higher risk for severe illness.
  • People with underlying health conditions: Chronic lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity are significant risk factors for severe COVID illness.
  • Patients with weakened immune systems: People with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, transplant patients, and anyone undergoing chemotherapy, are at higher risk for severe illness.
  • Pregnant women: Pregnant women, especially during their third trimester, are at higher risk for severe COVID illness.

Understanding these risk factors is important for tailoring treatment plans and ensuring that high-risk groups receive the care they need to prevent severe illness.

What’s Paxlovid?

Paxlovid is an FDA-approved, oral, antiviral medication that helps stop the virus that causes COVID from spreading in the body. It’s most effective when taken within five days of symptoms starting.

Who qualifies for Paxlovid?

Paxlovid is prescribed to patients who have mild to moderate COVID and are at high risk for developing severe illness, including people older than 65 and those with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or a weakened immune system.

Can I just take Paxlovid if I feel sick?

No. You must be evaluated by a doctor to determine if Paxlovid is appropriate and safe for you. It’s only effective during early stages of the infection, and for patients who meet eligibility criteria.

When should I seek medical care?

Visit a UHealth Jackson Urgent Care center if you experience:

  • Symptoms that are worsening or not improving after a few days
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, or confusion
  • Dehydration (dry mouth, dizziness, low urine production)
  • If you’re at high risk and test positive for COVID
